What Are whois / RDAP, and How to Read IP Registration Info
whois / RDAP are protocols for querying the registration info of an IP or domain. RDAP is the modern replacement for whois, returning structured data, and this site uses it to fetch registration records for IP ranges.
IP registration info tells you who an IP range is registered to, which Regional Internet Registry (RIR) allocated it, and the abuse-reporting email.
What it contains
The IP range (CIDR), network name, type, registration country, allocation holder, abuse-reporting email, and registration and last-changed dates.
What it's good for
Judging which organization owns an IP, whether it matches the location (helping identify native vs broadcast IPs), and reporting to the abuse email when under attack.
FAQ
- Is it normal for the registration country and IP location to differ?
- It may indicate a broadcast IP or cross-region routing. The registration country reflects where it's registered, the location reflects actual use, and a mismatch is worth noting.
- Where can I see an IP's whois?
- Look the IP up on this site; the "Registration Info" card displays the RDAP data.
