What Is an IP Address
An IP address (Internet Protocol Address) is a device's "house number" on the network, used to locate it and send and receive data. Every request you make online carries your IP, and servers use it to send data back to you.
IPs come in two kinds, public and private: a public IP is uniquely routable across the internet, while a private IP (like 192.168.x.x) is valid only within a LAN. By format they split into IPv4 (like 8.8.8.8) and IPv6 (like 2001:db8::1).

Public IPs handle outward communication; multiple home devices share one public IP via router NAT while each has a different private IP.

- An IP can pinpoint a rough region and ISP, but does not directly map to a personal identity; pinpointing an address requires ISP cooperation, which ordinary websites can't do.
- Is an IP address fixed?
- Home broadband is mostly dynamic IP (it changes), while servers and leased lines commonly use static IP (fixed).
