Why IP Geolocation Is Inaccurate, and How Precise It Really Is
IP geolocation is inferred from databases, not GPS positioning. Country-level accuracy is very high, city-level has some deviation, and pinpointing a street or exact location is essentially impossible.
Common reasons for inaccuracy: IP ranges being reassigned, ISPs routing across regions, broadcast IPs, and lagging database updates.
Accuracy by level
Country-level is usually 95%+ accurate, city-level about 50-80%, and the latitude/longitude is only an approximation of the city center, not a real home address.
FAQ
- Why is the located city wrong?
- City-level has significant error by nature, and ISPs may route IP ranges across cities; rely on country- or province-level results for more reliability.
- Can it pinpoint a house number?
- No. The latitude/longitude from IP geolocation is a city or area approximation and cannot pinpoint an address.
