Latency, Packet Loss & TTL Explained
Latency (RTT, round-trip time) is how long data takes to make a round trip, in milliseconds; packet loss rate is the fraction of packets lost; TTL is a packet's maximum hop count, which helps infer the remote system and path.
This site's "Latency Test" measures the actual HTTP RTT from your browser to regions worldwide, helping you judge cross-border route quality.
What counts as normal
Same-city / same-region is often <50ms, cross-country 100-300ms is common; packet loss should be near 0, and sustained loss means a line problem.
Common causes of high latency
Long physical distance, congested international gateways, detours, or throttling on the remote end; switching routes or nodes may help.
FAQ
- Are latency and bandwidth the same thing?
- No. Latency is "how fast" (response delay), bandwidth is "how wide" (throughput); gaming cares about latency, downloading cares about bandwidth.
- How do I measure latency to a specific region?
- Click Start on the "Latency Test" card on this site's home page to measure the RTT to multiple regions worldwide.
